American River
Fishing is fair. A few reports of half pounders being caught in the upper river around Goethe Park. A #12 olive Fox’s pupa with a #16 tan birds nest swung
at the end of the dead drift can be deadly when the caddis are emerging in the afternoon. Search riffles and tailouts to find feeding steelhead. Stripers are
from Watt Avenue down in the backwater sloughs. Fishing a whistler in white or olive on a type 6 shooting head will get some aggressive grabs. Concentrate on
the sandy flats and inside bends in 4-10 feet of water. Stripers will become more aggressive with warmer air and water temperatures.
Feather River
Fishing is good. Steelheads are being caught in riffles in the morning and deeper tailouts and drop-offs during the day when the sun is on the water. In the
morning, fish a San Juan worm with a pt dropper under an indicator before hatches start. Use a dead drift through the riffle with a swing at the end of the
drift. Caddis will start getting active around 10am. Switch to Weir’s caddis pupa with a #16 flashback pheasant tail dropper. Search deeper runs and drop-offs
to find fish. Best fishing is from a drift boat but the low flow section above the outlet is very wadable at 600 cfs.
Lower Sac River
Fishing is good. Flows are remaining steady at 7,000 cfs which will keep the trout on the bite. Fishing in the morning with a yellow sucker egg and
micro mayfly dropper is catching fish in 4-6 feet of water. Bouncing the egg along shallow flats will entice fish to grab. Switch to a golden stone with
a #16 red head prince nymph midday. Concentrate on the seams between slow and fast currents to find fish. Fishing a golden stone around structure such
as clay banks will also find fish. Change to a tan caddis pupa in the afternoon. Fish along the bank where there is vegetation. Fish will key on emerging
caddis and drowned caddis along the bank. A few reports of fish being caught on dry flies through the flats on an E/C caddis. Look for rising fish and
present the fly with a downstream drift. Caddis hatches will improve with warmer weather.
Upper Sac River
Fishing is fair. Best fishing is midday to late afternoon on warmer days with hatches of mayflies, caddis, March browns and yellow sallies. Start the
day nymphing a stonefly with a micro mayfly dropper in the morning before hatches emerge. Look for fish rising to sporadic hatches of mayflies around
midday. Drift a light Cahill or stimulator with a micro mayfly dropper. In the afternoon, yellow sallies and caddis are hatching on warmer days.
Drifting a headlight yellow sallie through pocket water and runs will get fish to bite. Look for hatches of green drakes and stoneflies with some
warmer weather. Rainbows are spawning – please do not tread on rainbow redds.
Trinity River
Trinity River is running high and is not fishable due to annual flushing flow.
Truckee River
Fishing is fair. Best fishing is in the morning on sunny days due to higher flows from runoff, but hatches will come off during the warmest part of
the day. Fishing higher up the river above tributaries will be clearer than lower sections. On cloudy days, fish will be feeding on BWO. High stick a
March Brown nymph with a micro mayfly dropper through riffles and pocket water in the morning. Look for an afternoon hatch of March Browns. Look for
better action on the surface with some warmer weather and decreased runoff.
Hat Creek
Expect hatches of BWO, PMD’s, caddis and lots of anglers. Salmon flies should a couple or more weeks away with warmer temperatures.
