Casa Mar Lodge
Casa Mar Lodge is located on the
northeast Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in a remote rain
forest setting, nestled among seven acres of tropical
gardens. The lodge is accessed by commercial flights
from San Jose, Costa Rica, to Barra del Colorado. The
eager staff greets you in Barra del Colorado and
transfers your gear to awaiting boats. A 10-minute boat
ride through the jungle offers breathtaking scenery
guaranteed to boost your adrenaline. After breakfast,
get ready to fish!
Your arrival at the lodge immediately puts you in a
state of relaxation and the jungle surrounds you with
its exotic sounds and sights. Casa Mar Lodge has
six-duplex cabins separate from the main lodge, which
houses the kitchen, tackle shop and recreation room. The
cabins are scattered about on the premises with brick
walkways between them. The cabins feature two twin beds
with private bathrooms and plenty of space to move
around. Electricity, hot water, fresh drinking water,
laundry service and open bar add to the luxurious
amenities Casa Mar has to offer. Food is home-cooking
style and you'll have all you can eat at every meal.
Tarpon numbering in the tens of thousands are found
among the sheltered rivers and lagoons. Tarpon can also
be hooked in the surf, and an 80 pound tarpon with no
boat to aid in the chase presents a challenge! Weather
changes in recent years allow anglers to fish for tarpon
year-round. Tarpon average 75 to 80 pounds, with many
fish over100 pounds taken. It is not uncommon for an
angler to jump 30 fish a day when the fish are grouped
in deeper areas. When the sea is calm, it is possible to
venture outside the river mouth where tarpon are
bunched. Tarpon are extremely tough and backup rods are
highly recommended.
Snook also invade the Rio Colorado and surrounding
waters. They can be fairly unpredictable, but in years
past, they have been found in the river system from
November through early February in good numbers.
Averaging only five pounds, Snook are great gamesters
for light tackle and fly-rod enthusiasts. Larger Snook
become more numerous in April and May, and then again in
September and October. Many of the larger Snook are
taken from the surf during their spawning run.
Anglers also enjoy sport with smaller gamesters such as
Machaca, Guapote and Mojarra. After a long day of
fishing for monster tarpon, you may want to relax the
muscles and peruse the lagoons for these small, but
spunky gamefish.
All of the fishing is from 17-foot fiberglass boats with
wide beams and plenty of moving room. The front of these
boats offer a flat casting and fighting platform
enabling you to get the upper hand on your fish. The
boats are powered by 25 to 40 horsepower motors allowing
quick access to the "hot-spots" The guides are
knowledgeable in all aspects of fishing and are
English-speaking. |
