Pez Raton Fishing Lodge -
The real difference are the guides - besides the great accommodations, the meals, the handling of the transfers, and the pro-staff. Alex, the owner, and his team have a complete command of English. They know Los Roques supremely well having pioneered the fishing there from the late 80's and they have that rare ability to just add a little flavor and variety to a day. Los Roques is famous for its small wadeable flats that offer wonderful fishing for very decent sized tailing fish and for the beach fishing where the bonefish hang off the beaches and raid the baitfish. |
With the flexibility to operate either the
traditional pinero (panga style) boats or their Keys-type, flats skiffs, they can access water and therefore different species and types of fishing that the
pinero cannot, stalking schools, pods, or singles. In one day you can enjoy some fine, productive bonefishing to tailing fish, you can hook big-eye jack, land flag yellow-tail snappers and jump baby tarpon in the 10-30 lb. class as well as cast to fish in the 100 lbs calls rolling in deeper water but perfectly catchable or chase permit in the deep white sand flats. On top of this they have a small blue water boat to take guests out to fish for wahoo or tuna, for an added fuel charge. Alex is most driven by a quest for excellence. His enterprise, which he shares with his enchanting wife, Elena, is purely a vehicle to satisfy a boiling passion for fishing. He responds to the same in others and rallies to the cause with genuine desire. He knows that a first-rate offering is the best way to the goal. And he is sensitive to his place in the big picture of world-class fishing. |

Schedule
- You will have breakfast about 6:30 - 7:00 a.m. (time could be adjusted due to tidal influences). Departure to the flats is at 7 - 7:30 a.m. via one of the 26 ft v-hulled open launches or skiffs. Several of the flats are immense but most are firm fringe flats at the edges of islands and do not require extensive walking. You will be dropped off with a guide per two fishermen and given the time and rendezvous point for meeting. The boat will wait to make sure you're in a productive area. Start walking slowly, stalking for bonefish. Your guide will help spot fish and walk you through the |
flat
in aspect to sun, wind and tide. We've received reports from fishermen who didn't leave a 500-yard area during a single day; other days you will walk much greater distances. We recommend that you return to the boats midday for lunch, and then continue fishing until four when you return to camp, since the sun sets at 6:30 p.m. It is requested that all fishermen be back around 4:00 p.m. so that the camp staff has ample time to aid a boat that might be delayed for any reason. The distance to the fishing areas will range from an average of 30-40 minutes to a maximum of an hour. There |
are
also productive flats within a 10-minute run. All boats have life jackets, and cell phones, also a Bimini top to protect you from the sun. Everything possible will be done to keep fishermen as dry as possible during the open water crossings. However, there will be times, especially coming back in the afternoon, when you might get wet from the waves and boat spray. We strongly suggest that you carry a good rain jacket for protection. It will always be warm, but if is cloudy and windy and you are traveling at a fair rate of speed, you could feel chilly and need a windbreaker/rain jacket. Be candid about your special requirements and feedback from your fishing day and feel free to make any suggestions you have for improving the program to the manager and trip host. After a refreshing shower, you will have an opportunity to swap fishing stories and enjoy a cool drink and hors d'oeuvres while overlooking the bay. Dinner is served from 7-7:30 p.m. Each evening the guides will determine the next day's schedule on the basis of client input and careful rotation of the productive flats to ensure the grounds are rested. The following day's schedule will be presented at dinner so you can locate on the map where you will be fishing tomorrow. |

Los Roques
- Non-fishing activities are limited to combing solitary beaches shared only with the odd sand crab or sea turtle; birding (you can get incredibly close to the nesting boobies); snorkeling; and a visit to the sea turtle research center. There is a small dive shop on the island offering scuba excursions. The distinctive rock-like peaks that form the backdrop of El Gran Roque, and for which the archipelago is named, are a worthwhile hike for the energetic. In summary, it is a place to rest, restore yourself, and commune with nature - the antithesis of a glitzy, high-rise, beachfront resort. |
