After having our hearts broken with the loss of our old friend, Casa Mar Lodge, we searched for several years and we believe we have found a great new companion — “Casa de Barra”.
"CdB" is the perfect choice for anglers wanting to experience a very unique style of tarpon fishing in one of the most ecologically interesting spots in Central America.
Costa Rica is considered one of the most ecologically-diverse areas in the world. You are likely to see howler monkeys, crocodiles, spider monkeys, 1500-orchid species, tree frogs, caymens, butterflies, white-faced Capuchin monkeys and sea turtles. The spectacular bird population provides for an amazing bird watching experience with osprey, great blue heron, white hawks, macaws, parrots, toucans and much more.

Tarpon can be found not only in freshwater but also in saltwater, and these times afford the angler the opportunity to fish these giants in the sheltered rivers and lagoons. During calm weather throughout the year, and especially starying in mid-August and running into October, tarpon can be found in vast numbers just outside the mouth of the river in the Caribbean Sea.
In December and January, snook, ranging is size from 3-12-pounds invade the Rio Colorado.
You can also catch snook, jacks, red drun, guapote (also often known as rainbow bass), machaca and mojarra in the jungle waters, lagoons and canals.

Once there, you will most likely arrive late in the afternoon or early evening, resulting in the need to overnight prior to arriving at the lodge. You will need to spend the first night in San José. Ultimately, you will be flying to Barra del Colorado, a small fishing village located in the Province of Limon, in the morning on a chartered flight that we will arrange. The flight normally departs at 6:15 a.m. This is a 35 minute flight to the coast. Guides and staff from CdB will be waiting for you. They will gather your gear and transfer you to the lodge, which is only moments away. You will enjoy a made to order breakfast and typically be out fishing by 8:00 a.m.
Situated between the river mouth and the airstrip, at Barra del Colorado, Casa de Barra is an all new facility with air-conditioned rooms, ceiling fans, plentiful food, a large bar and dining area. The kitchen is staffed with well trained professionals to satisfy your dining needs. Oh… did we mention the pool?
"CdB" is located on the northeast Caribbean coast in the remote Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge. The ecosystem is host to spectacular flora and fauna.
The lodge has individual rooms and/or cabins that have twin beds, private bathrooms, screened windows, ample electricity, hot water, lights, fans and air-conditioning.
Dinner is served family style in the dining room and meals are home-cooked by their local chefs. They serve American food and local dishes. You will enjoy their home-grown treats such as pineapple, breadfruit, bananas, papaya, mango, oranges, coconut and other fruits.
After dinner, guests retire to the lounge/bar to relax and enjoy drinks, fishing stories and the modern convenience of satellite television and a gaming area.
But best of all, our long-time trusted associate, Lefty Perez, is back and is running the fishing program! He is looking forward to seeing his old friends return and is anxious to play host, seeing that your desires and fishing requests are met again.
Most all of the area's fly fishing guides began their guiding careers under the tutelage of Lefty, who has world-class experience as a fly fisherman and is the winner of several international fly-fishing tournaments. Lefty may have lost count, but by the best of our records he is begining somewhere around his 40th season in the area. No one there has more local sportfishing knowledge than Lefty.
With full complement of boats, Casa de Barra is ready to fish both outside the mouth and up in the river. A series of big boats are fully equipped for safety and outfitted for offshore tarpon fishing. The newly fabricated little boats are ideal for fly fishermen who enjoy pursuing the jungle fish in the remote, isolated lagoons and creeks of the river system. Stable boats with wide casting decks make for perfect presentations. Lefty has amassed all the necessary equipment and has the flies ready for sale, so you are welcome to “travel light” and be assured you will have everything you need.
All the rods, reels, line and fly outfits are furnished. You pay for the flies/lures you lose or wear out. If they are in good condition or in the package, they don’t charge you.
They have good and various weights of fly lines and up to 1000-grain sinking and shooting heads.
They have light fly and spin outfits for guapote, mojarra and machaca.
