River Haven Lodge is a specialty Brown Trout fly fishing luxury lodge – Upper South Island, New Zealand
Scotty and his lovely wife Leya, own property ON the Mangles River front, and have built “River Haven Lodge” to accommodate those with the same passion for fly fishing
Top of the South Island, New Zealand, has been called "The Rolls Royce of brown trout fly fishing anywhere in the world".
Only three minutes from Murchison and located in Kahurangi National Park, River Haven Lodge is centrally located in the Top of the South Island of New Zealand, giving you access to over thirty rivers by car and another twenty rivers by helicopter.
The South Island is primarily a Brown Trout fishery. The general season opens on October 1st and runs through the end of April.
Enjoy two rivers within walking distance of your cabin! Scott "The Trout" will arrange a guide for you, either himself or one of his team. Located ON the Mangles River, you can walk outside and have a cast! There are twenty rivers within one hour’s drive, or another twenty by helicopter which will pick you up at your front door if you desire!
Each season offers its own unique fishing experience. Spring is a great time to target hungry trout that are feeding hard and trying to regain condition after the winter. It is also a great time to catch large sea run trout that enter many coastal rivers from the sea.
Summer is characterized by warm days and well conditioned free rising trout typify the fishing experience throughout the country. Summer is also the time that lake trout are busy feeding on smaller fish and trolling is an effective method to target them.
January, February and March also offer the best opportunities to catch large salmon in the braided rivers of the East Coast of the South Island as they enter the rivers from the Pacific Ocean to begin their epic spawning journey.
Autumn offers superb fishing. The water is cooler and the fish more active. With few people around it is easy to find a secluded spot, and mid afternoon insect hatches can encourage fish to feed actively.
Scott Murray, better known as “The Trout” around the world has become famous in his own right as a renowned Brown Trout Fly Fishing Guide. He leads River Haven Lodge's very experienced fly fishing team of guides. Some stream beds and banks are rocky and can be physically demanding, requiring longer hikes and some maneuvering over heavy boulders (especially with heli fishing). There are other areas that are very easy to walk and offer great fishing.
