His extensive saltwater experience includes Baja California plus inshore and bluewater up and down the west coast. He co-hosted ESPN's "In Search of Flywater" televison show.  Conway is the current IGFA world record holder of Redfish on 10 kg tippet, a 41.65 pound bull.

Captain Dave Trimble is On the Fly Fishing Charters and is Southern California’s most diverse and experienced charter service. Specializing in fly fishing, they are also fully equipped to accommodate conventional gear fishermen as well. Guests are treated to top-of-the-line boats, tackle, and service to make their trip the trip of a lifetime.  Capt. Dave’s guests have taken trophies of over 35 species, from Alaska to Panama, in both salt and fresh water. With over 2,000 days of guiding experience, our guides have what it takes to put you on world-class fish of many types on the fly.

Seasons & Species

Makos on the Fly – These captains have developed special techniques to attract, catch, and release Mako sharks on fly gear. This exciting new approach allows you to sight cast to Makos, see the take, and enjoy one of the most acrobatic and powerful fish you've ever tangled with.

Fly-fishing for mako sharks is a unique experience. Without a doubt, San Diego offers fly fisherman, of all experience levels, the best opportunity in the United States to target mako sharks up to 200 pounds.  In fact, Southern California’s summertime shark fishing trips offer a fly fisherman as high of a percentage at releasing a 100lb fish "On The Fly" as anywhere else in the country. That's right! If your heart is set on catching a truely big fish, your odds are just as good, or better, of hooking and releasing a big shark on a fly rod than a tarpon, sailfish or marlin over 100lbs anywhere in the U.S., east or west coast.

Seasonal Offshore Species - Southern California enjoys a huge diversity of pelagic saltwater species, including bluefin, yellowfin, skipjack, striped marlin, dorado, and more. Depending on the season and your interest, trips can be customized to take advantage of the available species.

Seasonal Coastal Species - You don't have to go far offshore to enjoy great saltwater fly fishing.  At the right time of year, bonito, barracuda, yellowtail, kelp bass, and the occasional white seabass can be caught just a short run from  the home port of Mission Bay.  Just as when fishing offshore, each trip is customized to take advantage of the available species.

Although there is fishing to be had all year long, the prime season generally ranges from April-November. It is dependent upon the water temperatures, which change from season to season, year to year.

San Diego and Mission Bays offer outstanding fishing for a medley of inshore species, including spotted bay, sand and calico kelp bass, shortfin corvina, bonefish (yes, the same fish found on Florida flats), halibut, barracuda, bonito and mackerel. This is generally a year-around fishery, and is a lot of fun on appropriately sized light rods.

Itinerary

Full and Half-Day Trips

Shark and Nearshore Trips - Want to pit yourself against a Mako?  Scrap with a Tuna?  Brawl with a Yellowtail?  When these offshore fish venture close to shore, call us to set up a trip with Bowman Bluewater or On the Fly Fishing Charters and we will get you into the middle of the action.

In season, you will encounter Sharks, Tuna, Yellowtail, White Seabass, Bonito, and Barracuda, all a relatively short distance from shore.

Full-Day shark fishing trips average 8-9 hours. A typical day starts with a quick boat ride (usually less than 1 hour) to the fishing grounds. Once you arrive, the captain will prepare and create a chum slick to attract the sharks. Targeted species are Mako Sharks (May - November), Blue Sharks (year-around) and Thresher Sharks (April-June).  Mako sharks over 200 lb have been caught and released on the fly within 10 miles of the coast.

San Diego and Mission Bay Fishing Trips - The calm, sheltered waters of San Diego and Mission Bays offer outstanding fishing for a medley of inshore species.

During the bay trips, the primary target is the Spotted Bay Bass, but you may also encounter Sand and Calico Kelp Bass, Shortfin Corvina, Bonefish (yes, the same fish found on Florida flats), Halibut, Barracuda, Bonito and Mackerel.

This is an ideal trip for the person just starting out salt water fly fishing, as the action can be fast and furious on smaller fish, using 5 - 7wt rods. And don't discount the fight - Spotted Bay Bass will fight as hard as any smallmouth bass of the same size, so be prepared for a tussle!.

Beach Trips - Stalk, cast and hook the West Coast’s ultimate fly fishing challenge - the Corbina! Considered the Bonefish of the West Coast, these sleek beauties will put your fly casting skills to the test… the ultimate sight casting challenge! There are also plenty of surf perch and croaker to be caught, with the occasional halibut and white seabass hanging around to break tackle and stop hearts. Trip options are available up and down San Diego's sandy beaches - wherever the fish are.

San Diego Bassin' Trips - Fly Fishing - Sight cast poppers to some of the biggest largemouth in the nation on the world famous San Diego City Reservoirs! Big, smart and aggressive, these largemouth monsters will show you why they are considered Americas # 1 fresh water game fish!

Carp Fishing on the San Diego Lakes - The "golden ghost" is one of the most prized game fish in Europe, and is fast becoming a popular target for US fly-fishermen as well!

Carp are smart, shy fish that require a precise presentation, and they fight like hell when hooked! San Diego has several lakes with large carp that feed in shallow water, providing excellent opportunities for taking one on the long rod.  At the right time, these carp can be taken on topwater flies!
