Pat Jaeger - Eastern Sierra & Mammoth Lakes Guide Service

Pat Jaeger has been fishing and exploring the area in and around Mammoth Lakes for over 30 years.  He has made it his life to be outside, both summer and winter, and through his experiences, Pat has developed a deep and intimate knowledge of the area and the fisheries. Pat is also an accomplished saltwater angler, and as such has brought to the mountains and his trout guiding many interesting insights into the world of catching fish. Pat is also very proud of his accomplishments over the course of the time he has spent in Northern California as well as Southern Oregon fishing and guiding.  His objectives as a fly fishing guide are quite simple; to find out your visions, expectations and goals, also to find water that will give you the best opportunity to hook fish. He is a master at simplifing the essence of fly-fishing to the newest of fishermen and to challenge the most advanced of anglers and promises to provide trust, safety, good food and great memories to all guests.

Seasons & Species

Click "here" to learn about the High Sierra "On the Water" Fly Fishing Clinics

we are offering in conjunction with Pat!

This is a year around fishery.  In fact, some of the very best fishing of the whole year occurs in mid-winter when water levels are often times at their lowest giving anglers access to the stream bottoms for easier and safer wading.

Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout in excess of 20 inches are not uncommon; 14 to 15 inch trout are the rule rather than the exception; and 12 to 13 inch trout are standard. You can also find Brookies and Goldens too. There are some different hybrids in select areas which makes for interesting catches.

The general season is from the last Saturday in April to November 15th, but now days, much of the water is open to fishing year around.

"On the Water Fly Fishing Clinics:

We are pleased to team with Pat on a 2-day educational experience to improve your success in nymph, dry fly, steamer and wet fly fishing.  You will be introduced to entomology, reading the water, casting applications, short and long line dry fly presentation, indicator and indicator-less nymphing, fly selection, planning and basic knots.

Itinerary

LOWER OWENS DRIFT TRIPS

A unique way to get away from weekend crowds and explore new, trout infested water is to go by boat. Since most of the Lower Owens River below the Wild Trout Area is not accessible by foot, drifting is the best way to get around. Still the ticket for guiding one angler is by using an Outcast pontoon boat.  This has worked unbelievably well.

And this season, Pat has a new, 15-foot Hyde drift boat which will accommodate two anglers in style.  This boat was chosen for its state-of-the-art profile, excellent draft in shallow water, and hull construction that keeps it warm in winter, cool in summer and quiet always. It is the finest drift boat in the Owens Valley.

During drift trips, you will be taught refined techniques such as nymph fishing with and without indicators, using streamers with sinking lines, and long- and short-line trout hunting with dry flies.

Drift-boat fishing can accommodate anglers of all kinds. It’s perfect for the beginner or advanced, the wader or non-wader, and the young to young at heart.
