The 65 miles of the South Fork of the Snake River is known by many as one of the best tailwater and dry fly fisheries in the US. The various types of fish that can be caught include brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout, with some measuring up to 20 inches.
There are approximately 64 miles of river from Palisades Reservoir to the confluence with the Henry's Fork. Every mile offers some of the best trout fishing the world has to offer.
"The Upper" starts at Palisades Dam and ends at the Conant Valley boat access. This section encompasses approximately 15 river miles. With 4 public boat ramps, the upper river is the most accessible. From the Irwin access the river opens up as it meanders through Swan Valley. The side channels and the shallow riffles offer excellent wading opportunities and some of the best dry fly fishing on the river.
There are two public accesses in the canyon section Cottonwood and Wolf. The float from Conant to Cottonwood is about 15miles so once you're in the canyon, you're in. The upper canyon has no other access. Natural Retreats Outfitters Snake River is able to offer guests a private access about 12 miles down from the Conant boat ramp so your day in the canyon is not rushed and you can experience some of the most beautiful country East Idaho has to offer East Idaho has to offer.
"The Lower" South Fork of the Snake is considered the section from the Byington Bridge down to Menan. This is an area of the river that can be very technical to drift. The lower end spreads back out and offers some great fishing. There are numerous diversions and side channels on the lower end and the guides of South Fork know the way through them, offering anglers a tremendous angling advantage. The "Lower Section" covers approximately 24 miles of river, and is noted for the brown trout population.

Fathers and sons have long spent quality time together at a waterway, or in some cases they are a place for dad to escape the family for some peace and quiet! The river is less than 100 feet away from the lodge. If keeping your feet, or at least your mount's, on dry land is more appealing, take a trail ride through Rainey Creek and end your day by trying a square ice cream cone at the creek's country store.
Parks and pools
The Palisades Reservoir to the southeast of Swan Valley, is a 16,000 acre pool that's perfect for viewing the wildlife and boating. Catch a few fish while you're there and your day is complete. If the fishing close to the lodge or on the reservoir hasn't satisfied your appetite for angling, there's more on the Hansen Guest Ranch, which also provides hiking, hunting and more across its 17.5 acres.
Sports and adventure
If your golf bag travels wherever you do, you can take a drive up Route 31 to the Teton Reserve Golf Course to practice your swing. If however you always travel with mountain bikes strapped to your vehicle, give the suspension a workout on the Swan Valley Area Mountain Bike Trails. To explore at a more leisurely pace with more stops to admire the view and consider your route, you can take the Swan Valley Area Trails. Both the bike and hiking trails begin at the East Ririe Highway.
There's a catch and release policy and you may find that your fishing is observed by a range of wildlife including golden eagles, water fowl, elk, deer, moose and even bears!
