Holbox Fly Fishing Adventure Lodge

Holbox Fly Fishing Adventure Lodge

There are devoted fishermen that travel the globe in search of giant Tarpon, and there are those that just want great fly fishing in paradise. Coincidentally, Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge has both.

Just 100 miles and one short ferry ride away from the bustling beach town of Cancun, (yet worlds away) Holbox Island may be the perfect place to leave your "day to day" behind. The Yucatan Peninsula has been one of sport fishing's premier destinations for decades, and now the superb Tarpon fishing has cemented its reputation as a place to add to every traveling angler's "bucket list". Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge is the perfect combination of warm water fly fishing and superb beach front accommodations.

Seasons & Species

Baby Tarpon (and many other species) are available year round, while the Trophy Tarpon are generally found May through September, when the calmer seas allow for delivering your fly to the fish. The Silver King can put on quite a show for anglers, spending most of the fight in the air rather than the water.

Summertime trips can combine the huge offshore trophy tarpon with the smaller “nursery” style fishing of the back channels. Traditionally, this summer fishing focuses on the big tarpon, so while 12 weight rods are the norm, most guests will also spend some time targeting the smaller members of the species for a break, and because it’s so fun! Plan on lots of casting to visually surfacing fish, with you guide poling you from likely spot to likely spot and then helping you spot the fish.

You can also expect to encounter Permit and Bonefish on the flats, as well as Cobia, Snapper, Jacks, Grouper and Barracuda whenever you cast offshore. Fly fishermen are conditioned to target the Tarpon (and who wouldn’t want the opportunity for such a trophy) but the spin fishermen and those looking for more action on the end of the line will appreciate the variety of all the offshore species available.

Itinerary

Logistics are a snap- fly into Cancun from anywhere, and overnight at one of the many hotels. You’ll be met at the hotel the next morning by your shuttle driver, who will take you 2 hours north to Chiquila for a 45 minute ferry trip to the Island. Once there, you will be met and shuttled by golf cart to Isla Holbox Flyfishing Lodge.

After returning from fishing and the nightly lodge Happy Hour, you will be advised on the various excellent restaurant options available for you chose from each night.

Accommodations

The lodge is located on a beautiful beachfront within a 5-minute walk from town and presently caters to just 10 fishermen per week. The beach is perfect for an afternoon swim and the sunsets are spectacular. Lodge manager Luciano Govi is one of the most gracious and hospitable hosts you are ever likely to meet.

Other Activities

Unlike most world class destinations, Holbox Fly Fishing & Adventure Lodge is a perfect spot not only for the sport fishing purist, but for the non fishing members of the family as well. The beaches are legendary for sun lovers, the Island itself defines the laid back, "out of the way" (but sophisticated) Island vibe and the scenery and wildlife is world class.

Non fishing partners have a number of options to choose from. Non fishing activities are great...try horseback riding on the beach, "sweet water" cenote (freshwater) swimming, Whale shark viewing trips, jungle or oceanfront kayaking, birding and Island exploration with hours of relaxation on the empty white sand beaches of this undiscovered island. Some of the itineraries include a trip to the incredible ruins of Chichen Itza, and viewing the pink flamingos that gather nearby each year.
