Estancia del Zorro, Chile

Estancia del Zorro, Chile

When areas of North America, such as Montana, are wrapped in a mantle of cold and snow, Chilean Patagonia basks in spring and summer warmth. In the winter, escape from the Northern Hemisphere and head south to the peaceful depths of Chilean Patagonia.

The season at Estancia del Zorro Chile runs from the first of November through the first week of May. The word awesome could very well have been created to try to describe this spot in the depths of the incredible Patagonian Andes.

Chile has been the safest, stable and most friendly South American country. The Aysén Region of Chile has preserved a unique fishery that has made it worldwide famous, as the resident brown trout capital of South America.

Estancia del Zorro Lodge is located 45 minutes from Coyhaique, the Capital City of the Aysén Region. Chilean Patagonia's Estancia del Zorro is in the Coyhaique Alto mountain range on the Chilean-Argentine border, 23 miles northeast of Coyhaique, Chile. The 15,000-acre Estancia rests in the habitat of the red fox (zorro), the namesake of the lodge. An abundance of condors, eagles, myriad other birds and unexplored waters full of brown trout enticing fly fishers and bird watchers to experience Chile Fly Fishing, the beautiful countryside and to follow the trail of the red fox.

Out of Estancia del Zorro, guests fish for wild brown and rainbow trout, as well as King and Coho Salmon. Estancia del Zorro has lots to offer; fascinating landscapes; a world class fishery; luxurious accommodations; and gourmet Chilean food; a fine selection of Chilean wines and beverages (included); and very experienced bilingual guides.

Seasons & Species

The season at Estancia del Zorro Chile runs from the first of November through the first week of May. The word awesome could very well have been created to try to describe this spot in the depths of the incredible Patagonian Andes.

Predominantly a Brown trout area, don't be surprised if your day is highlighted with large numbers of Rainbows too.

The waters you will fish include streams, rivers and spring creeks, all located within the boundaries of the 15,000-acre Estancia or a short drive from the lodge. Many of these waters are seldom fished and some have only recently been discovered, producing diverse fishing conditions. While some offer exciting dry-fly action, others require challenging sight fishing in pristine, crystal clear waters where fish can grow as large as 32 inches.

The Estancia Del Zorro's spring creek, a mere 200 yards from the lodge, offers easy walk-in fishing for large, heavy brown trout. You will also have the unique opportunity to explore private freestone streams in both Argentina and Chile, two countries in one trip, reached by 30- to 90- minute rides by four-wheel-drive vehicles from the lodge. This is a very unique opportunity.

Itinerary

Estancia del Zorro Lodge is located 45 minutes from Coyhaique, the Capital City of the Aysén Region of Chile. Travel to the lodge requires you to simply fly to the Balmaceda airport, 3 hours south from Santiago. Whether you choose to overnight in Santiago on your way down, or plan your flights so that you can connect straight through is your choice. Once you have arrived in Balmaceda, the host of Estancia del Zorro will be waiting for you at the airport and will drive you the approximately one hour to the Lodge to start your Chile fishing holiday.

Your six full days of fishing will be coordinated with you, your fishing companion, your guide and your host – carefully taking into account your preferences, weather, fishing conditions and what's fishing the best at the moment.

Accommodations

Estancia del Zorro is a full service lodge where up to twelve guests are accommodated each week.

The main Quincho or Great Room invites guests to relax, swap fish stories, and make plans for the next day's angling adventure. Also located in the main building is the dining room where both breakfast and dinner will be served. Here guests can prepare their individual stream-side lunches each morning prior to departing for the day, and to also meet for social hour after fishing.

The new lodge facility has recently been completed, is beautiful and has a commanding view of the Rio Simpson Valley from its dramatically chosen location.

Other Activities

Biking: at Estancia del Zorro Chile there are mountain bikes available and can be taken to trails that are close to the lodge. That allows the guests to exercise and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area.

Horseback riding: non fishing guest can enjoy horseback riding on Estancia del Zorro. If interested, guests can experience the local wildlife as well as appreciate the life of a sheep working ranch. At the Estancia, there are gentle horses that afford guests safe rides in a gorgeous environment.

Hiking: Close to Coyhaique there are some excellent hiking trails; such as the Trapananda or the Aiken Park, that allow your nature guide to introduce you to the local vegetation, and get a better understanding of the area you are visiting.

Sightseeing: within an hour and a half of the lodge, guests can experience a wide variety of landscapes and places; from the steppe on the east going into the Andes, and down to the coastal rainforest and fjords in the west.

Condor Watching: for the ones that would like to see the majestic Chilean bird, Estancia del Zorro has a tour called "Waking Up with the Condors". You will need to be prepared to leave Estancia del Zorro early in the morning and be driven to an estancia that belongs to your host's family, the Galileas , "Punta del Monte". Once there, you will be driven to the summit of the condor cliffs. There you will be able to observe the condors very closely and in their natural habitat, gliding on thermals almost within arm's reach. Beyond any doubt this is an experience of a lifetime.
