The MR2 is THE reel of choice for guides in the Pacific Northwest and coastal British Columbia. The MR2 is a single action, direct drive reel in the "knuckle buster" tradition. We are quite confident in saying that there is no match for the Islander MR2 in the salmon mooching market today.
Salmon and halibut fishing will stress any tackle to its absolute limit. Some reels that are designed for this element have obtained the status of "disposable reels". A few new reels every season. The components have just plain worn out or the salt finally did its damage, it's often cheaper to replace than to repair. The MR2 is a reel for EVERY season. Some of our customers have had their reels in service for over 15 years!
Ideal for downrigging, the MR2 features a frame-side free spool lever that places the spool into a drag-less mode, allowing for quick drops to a desired depth. The drag is adjusted on the spool side, and offers a wide range of drag pressures to slow down and even stop that next record fish that gets hooked
Right Hand Only
Because of the freespool design of the MR2, it cannot be configured for left hand retrieve.
Line Recommendations Because of ductile nature of monofilament, Islander recomends filling two-thirds of the spool with #50 dacron backing, and then filling the last third of the spool with 350yards 20lb monofilament.
