Tikchik Narrows Lodge is located in the Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska in the 1.5 million acre Wood-Tikchik State Park. Bordering the State Park to the west is the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge which encompasses 4.7 million acres of land. The Wood-Tikchik system contains 13 major lakes which stack one above the other. The western edges of the lakes extend into beautiful fjords into the rugged Kilbuck Mountains. Togiak Wildlife Refuge contains 3 major river systems draining the Kilbuck Mountains to the southwest.
This area is only accessible by float plane and is over 300 miles from the nearest connecting roads system. Unlike most other Alaskan Lodges, Tikchik Narrows Lodge is totally isolated. We are not located in a town or village. Our neighbors are the undisturbed fish and wildlife which abound in this area.
For 2012, the first week starts on Saturday June 23rd. The last week starts on Saturday September 8th. All weeks run Saturday to Saturday. From the first week throughout the entire season all of the fresh water species are available.
The key to deciding when to come is to decide which species of Pacific Salmon you would like to target. In June and July the targets are King (Chinook) Salmon, Red (Sockeye) and Chum Salmon. In August and September this changes to Silver (Coho) Salmon and on even numbered years Pink (Humpback) Salmon. See run timing chart below.
In June and early July the freshwater species are mainly feeding on baby salmon which have hatched and are making their way to the ocean. By mid-July salmon are starting to spawn in some of the area rivers and streams where Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling concentrate on the spawning beds to feed on salmon eggs. Other rivers do not have spawning salmon until fall. These rivers offer fishing for Rainbow Trout, Grayling and Char using nymphs, streamers and dry flies.
Getting to the Lodge
You should plan on traveling to Anchorage, Alaska for your commercial flight to Dillingham, Alaska. Most of the major U.S. air carriers have flights to Anchorage.
You should plan on a Saturday arrival in Dillingham, Alaska. Peninsula Air has daily flights between Anchorage and Dillingham on a Saab turbo prop aircraft.
Because it is so remote, the logistics of moving all guests to and from Dillingham and the lodge requires that all guests arrive on the same flight into Dillingham. We will coordinate your flight so that all of the arriving guests arrive on the same plane.
Lodge staff will be in Dillingham to meet your flight and will assist you with all luggage transfers and transportation to the float planes for the flight to the lodge.
Each day’s fishing assignments are scheduled the evening before. The Head Guide will review your days fishing and discuss the many options with each angler. Where you fish will depend on your angling preferences. After dinner, each angler will know where they will be fishing, who their pilot is and who their guide will be for the next day.
The guides will then meet with each angler to let them know how to prepare for the next day’s fishing adventure. If you are using your own equipment, the guides will recommend what rods to take. The guides will also discuss lunch options and beverages.
Breakfast to order is served between 6:45 AM and 7:15 AM. The airplanes, boats and guides are ready to depart shortly after breakfast. You will return to the Lodge each evening between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Cocktails are delivered to your room upon request. In fact, while en route back to the lodge, the pilot will call in your drink orders so they can be in your room upon arrival.
Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails are served from 6:00 PM until dinner at approximately 7:00 PM.
