Rancho Leonero

Rancho Leonero

Set well apart from other East Cape hotels, Rancho Leonero is a lush old-world Baja resort offering a fishing, boating, diving and desert paradise, where coconut palms bend gracefully over miles of dazzling unspoiled beaches and rugged ancient desert wilderness.

The hotel itself is a natural extension of the Sea of Cortez, featuring 700 acres of Mexican Rancho with almost 2 miles of private beach. Enjoy the tropical-style elegance of native flagstone and palapa-roofed cottages, and comfortable, airy rooms.

Back in the 40's and 50's, Mexico's Baja peninsula was a rugged, remote area with few roads, and even fewer tourists. Cabo San Lucas was a sleepy fishing village, and most Americans had never even heard of the East Cape. Wealthy sportsmen and adventurers would fly down in their private aircraft, land on rough dirt airstrips carved out of the desert, and return with wild stories of the big fish they caught here.

During those Wild West days before paved roads and civilization came to Baja, Hollywood's "bad boys" would fly down in their private planes for some R&R where they could escape from the notoriety of their public lives and just hang out. The likes of John Wayne, Bing Crosby, and Errol Flynn were all frequent visitors at Rancho Leonero.

Guided Fly Fishing Opportunities In Baja, Mexico
Roosterfish, Dorado, Marlin, Tuna, & Other Gamefish

Specializing in fly fishing targeting gamefish from three distinctive zones in the Sea of Cortez: the beach, inshore and offshore. All trips include an American, English-speaking guide.

Beach Fly Fishing Trips
One of the most unique and spectacular aspects of fly-fishing the East Cape area is the miles and miles of accessible shore access. The Reel Baja offers daily guided beach trips with vehicle transportation to travel the beach in search of roosterfish, jack crevalle, pompano, ladyfish and other targeted inshore species.

Inshore Fly Fishing Trips
Inshore pursuits are performed from fast and agile pangas or cruisers that are able to cruise in shallow depths. Fishing inshore typically keys in on jack crevalle, roosterfish, pargo, sierra mackerel and other exotic species depending on the time of year.

Offshore Fly Fishing Trips
Offshore pursuits include big game fish such as yellowfin tuna, bonita, dorado, and billfish.

Custom Fly Fishing Trips
Simply describe your perfect trip and we will do the rest including booking the hotel, boat, guide and any other arrangements or reservations necessary.

If big time game fishing is what you're after you'll find 1,000 pound black and blue marlin prowling the waters off our shores, along with striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, huge yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, wahoo, grouper, snapper, roosterfish and dozens of other marine prizes luring below. And we've got the right boats and the best local guides to get you where the action is.

Pacific Blue Marlin make their homes all across the Pacific, including Mexican waters. The best season is considered July through December, but just like any species and fishery, yearly fluctuations do occur. Many major tournaments targeting Blue Marlin take place in October when most anglers feel the highest populations exist.

Itinerary

You could spend all day fishing for Roosterfish from the beach, but you'll most likely want to explore the deep blue sea with a rod in one hand, a beer in the other and a captain at the wheel of one of the Ranch's steadfast Cruisers. The Ranch boasts the highest boat to room ratio, meaning you and your friends will have a wide range of choices in your boat and Captain selection. Most of the Captains have at least 20 years experience and speak good English. Whether you want to do it all yourself, or if you'd rather wake up and find a couple Yellowfin Tuna in your ice chest, these guides will provide just the right level of support.

There are several direct flights by regional and national carriers to Los Cabos International Airport from the many cities in the western United States.

The easiest way to get from the Los Cabos airport to Rancho Leonero is to prearrange a ground transfer. TT Tours Cabo offers a fleet of new air-conditioned vans available to shuttle clients from the airport to Rancho Leonero and back. The cost each way varies from about $70 for 1 person to $15 per person for 8 people (from the La Paz airport the rates are slightly higher).

Shuttle taxis at the airport are also available. The cost is generally about $100 to Leonero. Be prepared to bargain for a better deal. Rental cars are also available, with prices ranging from about $40 - $200 per day (more for vans or 4WD vehicles).

Accommodations

Imagine stepping outside your back patio to find yourself on the white sands of the Sea of Cortez and two miles of private beach property. Of course it may be difficult to make it to the patio if the sleepy waves have their way with you. Though it is freeing to live without alarm clocks and watches, the muffled sound of small waves crashing outside your door could lull you to sleep for quite a while. Add the big comfortable beds and breeze from the hanging fan and you’re sure to need an alarm clock to keep you from sleeping all day.

From the outside, the adobe brick buildings take on an "Old Rustic Baja" feel. Inside, the spacious rooms and recently renovated interior provide for a home away from home. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, and an ocean view, that is, if you can keep your eyes open.

Feast on a delicious variety of custom dishes in the baronial dining room featuring Spanish leather chairs. Relax by the pool which sits directly off the legendary ocean front bar, known for its wicked brews, cocktails and eclectic mix of travelers.
